Travelport has completed its acquisition of Worldspan for $1.4 billion followng a protracted regulatory approval process in the US and Europe.

The conclusion of the deal makes Travelport, which also owns global distribution system Galileo and wholesaler GTA, one of the world’s largest networks of travel brands, content and services.

Travelport GDS chief executive and president Gordon Wilson said: “Galileo will be enhanced by Worldspan’s online distribution technology platform, while Worldspan will benefit from Galileo’s expanded supplier base and expansive content.”

The Travelport GDS division also comprises Shepherd Systems, a provider of business and marketing intelligence to the travel industry, aiRES, an airline IT product suite, and Thor, a provider of distribution and marketing services to travel-related companies.

“The complementary strengths of both companies will bring improved offerings for our agency and supplier customers, and we are particularly excited about the technology innovations and breadth of services we will be able to bring our suppliers and subscribers in the future,” Wilson said.

Travelport has approximately 6,000 employees, operates in 145 countries and reported revenues of $2.6 billion in 2006.
