January has unsurprisingly been identified as the cheapest month of the year to take a short-haul city or beach break from the UK.

Going away in the first month of the year then can provide savings of as much as 67% compared with the costliest months, according to TravelSupermarket, which searches prices across more than 25 package holiday providers.

Pricing data shows that January is consistently the cheapest month to take a short-haul break abroad.

The median price per person per night for a city break in January 2019 is £53.60 per person per night.

The second cheapest month of the year for a city break is November at £56.54, followed by February at £57.83.

The most expensive months of the year to go on an overseas city break from the UK tend to be May – £71 – and August – £69.70.

The median price per person per night for a seven to 14-night overseas beach break in January is as little as £51.57.

March is the next cheapest month of the year to take a beach holiday at £54.71.

The most expensive month of the year to take a short haul overseas beach trip is December at £71.33, followed by August at £72.84.

Emma Coulthurst, travel commentator at the site, said: “People don’t think to go away so close after Christmas; low demand means fantastic prices at the start of the year and the lack of queues at the major attractions and the feeling of being one of the locals, rather than a tourist, make up for any cooler temperatures.

“Yes, the weather can be unpredictable in beach resorts but with prices from as little as £83pp including flights and accommodation for seven nights to the Algarve – a whopping 67% cheaper than going in the height of the summer – it is worth considering as a sightseeing and foodie get away break.

“Holidays to these destinations can be as much as 204% more expensive in the height of the summer so it is really worth making the most of holiday prices at the beginning of the year.”
