Tourism Australia has signed a memorandum of understanding with UnionPay International to create “China-friendly payment” for incoming tourists.

This MOU will enable Tourism Australia and UnionPay International to collaborate on business development and joint promotional activity.

Tourism Australia hopes that the spending of Chinese tourists Down Under will be stimulated by facilitating the “highly-recognised” international payment.

This year is the China-Australia Year of Tourism, which celebrates the relationship between the two countries.

China has been Australia’s highest spending market for six consecutive years. Last year, 1.2 million Chinese tourists visited Australia, which is forecast to nearly double by 2020. Chinese tourists spent $9.7 billion in Australia in the year ending March 2017.

UnionPay is the preferred payment service provider for Chinese tourists and other visitors to Australia from the Asia Pacific region. UnionPay cards are currently issued in 42 countries and regions, and are accepted in 162 countries and regions around the world. In Australia, more than 90 per cent of ATM s and more than 70 per cent of merchants accept UnionPay cards.
