Virgin Atlantic has been able to upgrade its passenger service system for “free” because of its partnership with Delta Air Lines.

Chief executive Craig Kreeger said the behind the scenes changes have streamlined the back office functions, saving the firm millions.

The passenger service system powers the website, and mobile app, issues boarding passes and tracks luggage end to end.

Kreeger said: “We get the benefit of Delta’s skills and its development and have now got a more modern system than we had before.

“We are a relatively small in comparison so its very difficult for us to spend so much to stay ahead in technology. As we’re in partnership with Delta, it’s basically free, and will be a huge benefit to us as time evolves.”

Delta bought a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic in 2013 as the airlines entered a formal partnership.
