Airbnb has jumped into the world of live music by launching a new Music Experiences section on its global Trips platform.

The focus will be on up-and-coming musicians, offering access to smaller live music performances, underground nightlife and experiences hosted by artists, industry professionals and local music scenes. It is open to travellers and locals.

Trips launched on Airbnb in November with 12 cities and is expected to have options in a further 39 destinations by the end of 2017.

Airbnb has teamed up ith Sofar Sounds, which brings informal gigs to local neighbourhoods in 300 world cities, where the likes of Bastille, Hozier, Leon Bridges, James Bay, Yeasayer, George Ezra, Karen O, Tom Odell and Wolf Alice have played since 2010.

Music Experiences currently features in 13 cities: London, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Barcelona, Nairobi, Cape Town, Detroit, Miami, Paris, Havana, Tokyo, Florence and Seoul. There are around 100 music-related experiences listed on Airbnb Trips at the moment.

“Music is an incredible way to bring people together,” said Brian Chesky, Airbnb’s chief executive. “We’re launching Music Experiences to give people access to exclusive and immersive music events – from intimate live performances, special pop up gigs, underground music sessions and meeting local artists and performers. Through the platform, we’re able to support up and coming and local artists by connecting people to their events and bringing their music to even more fans around the world.”

Rafe Offer, Sofar Sounds co-founder, added: “Sofar Sounds, like Airbnb, is all about global community; the magic that happens when people come together around the universal things that really matter, like music.”
