Savvy foreign tourists are taking advantage of the post-Brexit vote plunge in the value of the pound to book holidays in the UK.

Outdoor accommodation specialist Pitchup.com has seen inbound bookings more than double in the last three months.

The highest volumes are coming from Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the US and Australia as overseas tourists see the weak pound as making the UK an attractive holiday option.

The most popular British destinations for inbound holidaymakers are Cornwall (11% of holidays by inbound customers), Devon (6%), Kent (6%), Dorset (5%) and North Yorkshire (5%), according to the firm which features 2,800 bookable camping, caravanning and glamping sites in 36 countries.

Founder Dan Yates said: “We’ve noticed a strong increase in savvy overseas holidaymakers making the most of the post-Brexit exchange rate, which makes Britain an attractive destination to many after years of being deemed comparatively expensive.

“Camping and caravanning is very popular in Europe and many visitors from Germany, the Netherlands and Spain are excited to cross the waters and explore the natural beauty of Britain. Meanwhile, American and Australian tourists can really benefit from the favourable exchange rate and budget accommodation that will make long-haul travel much more affordable.”

He added: “The natural beauty, picturesque sceneries and great variety of family-friendly activities our top selling areas can offer are a huge draw to overseas visitors, showcasing a combination of all the things that make Britain so appealing.”
